In this movie the rich and flourishing city is wearing clean and expensive clothes, combining it with modern sweaters, trousers, suits and shirts. The family of Raichands is very rich, happy and flourishing. These people are very kind, generous, and well-bred and open despite their financial well-being that exceeds the well-being of all surrounding people taken together. They respect tradition, follow rituals and treat each other politely and kindly. In this case, Raichand family is idealized, Indian contemporary culture especially its negative aspects are not represented completely. .
The central theme of the movie is tradition and family relationship, which creates a need for discussing relationship between Raichands in this essay. Family relationships in India are sacred, which means that family is so important that it is becoming equal to gods. It is worth paying special attention to relationship of different generations within the family: the eldest individuals are teaching, protecting and guiding the younger individuals, while it is a matter of great importance for the young people to communicate with grandmothers, grandfathers, siblings and parents. For the men from Raichands, for example, it is extremely important to care about the women of the family. Yash Raichand says to his sons that the honor of ancestors and family is the most important thing ever and that family interests must be met (Bhattacharya and Pandharipand 31). Another aspect of family relationship is the position of woman in the family. Though Indian culture is patriarchic and the decisions are made by men, women are no oppressed or ignored. On the contrary, Yash is very kind and gentle to his wife, though he makes decision by himself. Though the movie represents India in the end of 90-s, the marriages are still discussed by parents first and then approved or disapproved by those, who will get married. However, Nandini disagrees with Yash and says that contemporary young people should decide by themselves without parents' pressure.
