The Pursuit of the Dollar

Turns out it was a bit hard to make some cash as an aspiring teenage bassist. Therefore life shook me down and had me decide on a path that was going to make some money, and I decided to go to college in hopes that at the end of these four years I could land a job where money is hopefully a certainty. Looking back at this I find it pretty absurd that we live in a world where people cannot pursue their true dreams and aspirations all because they do not make enough money or that you cannot pay the bills with them. Now I understand that there are some very talented people who do eventually accomplish their dreams and live a life where they do everything they love for a living, but for the most part most people choose their life paths based on money. To me this idea is just as crazy as people jumping off of buildings or eating worms for cash, or it may even be worse because these are people's entire lives. I say it may be worse because instead of doing quick stunts where you win or fail right there, you are giving up years of your life to pay bills or to simply make money. Years that if money were not an issue I am sure would rather be spent differently for most people. I am sure many people would rather travel the world, practice becoming great musicians, professional athletes, or maybe even a baker who knows what kind of ambitions we could uncover for ourselves if money did not hold as much importance as it does. .
Why does money posses the power that it does in our society? It is clear that people dedicate courses of their lives for it, people overcome their fears for it, and in some cases people even kill for it. Now it brings me to question as to why it holds the power that it does within our society.
