The Legalization of Medical Marijuana

 

            In the United States, it is against federal law to possess, sell, or grow marijuana for any purpose if not prescribed. Alaska, California, DC, is the few states to have recognized the better use and the value of marijuana for medical reasons. Today Marijuana is still classified in many states as an illegal schedule1 drug alongside Heroin, Cocaine, and Morphine by the controlled substance act. Marijuana is a drug that comes from dried and cut leaves called the hemp plant, which has an active ingredient in it, called THC also known as Weed, Pot, Reefer, grass, and Mary-Jane. A new survey shows that 53% are all for legalizing marijuana, while 44% are opposed (Pew Research Center).
             Does Marijuana pose as a medical value? Is Marijuana harmful enough to remain illegal and how does it compare to other forms of illegal drugs that are not classified as legal? Lastly, what is Marijuana effect on our country and does making it legal change lives of others? .
             There are three major issues amongst Marijuana and its legal process. One reason is that marijuana is less dangerous than other drugs and is used for medicinal benefits. Another reason for legalizing medical Marijuana is it has harmless side effects that are presented to be less dangerous than most prescription medications, like Percocet which can be harmful causing permanent damage to the liver if becoming addicted and taking more than prescribed. Lastly Marijuana can be a prescription drug or it can be a recreational drug.
             Is it true that marijuana is often used to get high; this is why most people want to call it a recreational drug? Recreational drug use continues to be a topic of debate with healthcare professionals, government, and policymakers. I think drug use should be treated as a crime or, and a health issue. The most addictive drug, even above heroin, is nicotine Unlike Marijuana which is used to treat a variety of disorders that cause pain because of diseases like Cancer, HIV, Muscle Spasm, and arthritis; it is also used as an appetite stimulant for people with lack of nutrition which helps patients going through chemotherapy.
