Improving Conditions for the Homeless

Many of us wake up in a bed that lies in the comfort of our own home, drive to work or school, and eat hot meals practically every single day. As a person who resides in a middle class family, I can admit that I often take these privileges for granted without purposely doing it. Unfortunately, many individuals do not get to experience this way of living simply because they are homeless. These people are sleeping and living in places that are not stable or permanent. For example, they are sleeping on the streets, under bridges, and/or in shelters. The homeless population is steadily increasing every day; therefore, there should be discussions on whether or not it can be stopped and how. Homelessness is not only described as a state of being homeless. Ally Fogg, a journalist for The Guardian, describes homelessness as a "lack of housing, lack of jobs, lack of money, lack of social support, lack of mental health care, but above all, lack of compassion where it matters." Ally Fogg basically sums up this definition effectively. Some people say that homelessness is an epidemic that has no solution, but I disagree. Others say how this issue is preventable. In some cases this is true but in others, this isn't true because if that the case, many individuals wouldn't be out on the streets. Working families can't successfully prevent becoming homeless when their job lays them off due to budget cuts. If there isn't any income to pay the bills, there is no way that they will remain stable and in a permanent home. I believe homelessness can be eliminated from society if the government and citizens of the United States band together in order to establish permanent living spaces and jobs for those that are staying in shelters and sleeping on the streets. I want the government officials in the state of Texas to fund the permanent living spaces by withdrawing, some but not all, money from shelters, food banks, and other programs for the homeless in order to build a fund for the building of homes.
