Gender Roles in The Great Gatsby

Through different mediums such as advertisements and modern technology, suffragists in western America were able to make their opinions heard and therefore played a significant role in gaining women the right to vote.
The following informing is taken from the book "Fashion, Costume, and Culture: Clothing, Headwear, Body Decorations, and Footwear through the Ages". Towards the end of the 1920's there was much more entertainment available. For instance, automobiles were introduced and the jazz era had just begun. Therefore women wanted to discover these aspects just as much as men did. Moreover the 1920's were the age of the famous "Flapper" which was the name given to women who were essentially free from male dominance. "The flapper dress was boxy and hung straight from shoulder to knee, with no waistline, allowing much more freedom of movement than women's fashions before the 1920s" (Pendergast 732). Flappers were a symbol of the changing attitudes of what was socially acceptable for women. They defined for the first time women and their independence, breaking the rules of the common society where women were looked down upon. .
This idea of women wearing flappers and becoming more independent is evident throughout The Great Gatsby. For instance many rebellious woman attended Gatsby's parties. Their hair was "shorn in strange news ways" (Fitzgerald 40). Before the 1920's women were expected to dress in darker colors and conduct themselves in an orderly manner. Moreover their hairline was not to be long and their hemline had to be strictly below their ankles (Pendergast 732). This illustrated how women had less freedom, as they did not have control over what they could wear. One you argue that women had to follow certain rules in society. However at the beginning the 1920's this changed; as mentioned earlier more women wore flappers, which signified their more rebellious nature.
