1. Introduction.
The Bible is a wonderful book. It consists of sixty-six scripture. It was written by more than forty authors over one thousand and six hundred years. The authors were from various classes, including prophet, priest, king, shepherd, tax collector, fisherman, doctor, warrior, politician and man of letters, etc. It was written at various places, including wilderness, palace, forest, prison and island, etc. And it was written in various styles and contents, including history, theology, poem, proverb and letter, etc. However although so various these factors are, it was written in perfect unity and coherence. These scriptures are like sixty-six precious stones of different shapes and colors strung by an invisible hand into a single piece of jewel.
The whole book of the Bible is written in language that is simple, homely and straightforward, so is its structure. And abstract ideas are made as concrete as possible by the use of figure. John Milton wrote in his Treatise Concerning the Christian Religion, "the truth of the Bible is not to be taken literally; God has "accommodated" himself to our understanding, and shown in his Book in figurative language how man should conceive him morally and spiritually.".
Although the Bible is easy to read, it is not at all easy to understand. The Bible itself has warned all readers in 2 Peter (1:20), "knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit." It also teaches people the right way. Refer to the Song of Songs (4:2), "Whereof every one hath twins, And none is bereaved among them." This figure revealed the most important principle in dividing the Bible.
