How Romanovs came to the royal throne, when Moscovy Tsardom (Russian Tsardom) where at the end of dark period "the Time of Troubles"; How youthful and inexperienced Tsar Michael, the first Romanov's Tsar managed to restore stability, and to establish a solid base for his recipients, and finally transition of Russian Tsardom to the Russian Empire, one of the strongest European Empires, under ruling of Peter the Great. After death of Tsar Theodore the first, the last Russian Tsar of the Rurik dynasty in 1598, Russian Tsardom felt for almost 15 years in, "the Time of Troubles," (Smutnoe vremia in Russian), a period of political crisis. During this period Russian Tsardom were under unstable governmental power, peasant revolts, the challenges of foreign pretenders to seize the throne, conflicts with Sweden and Poland, internecine battles between boyar's families. All thus events caused major social and economic disruptions and threatened to destroy the state itself.
In 1613, Zemsky Sobor or the Assembly of the Land, that included chosen presenters from all classes of population, such as boyar families, provincial nobility and village peasantry, met for election a new Tsar. The choice was youthful Michael Theodorovich Romanov. The Romanovs weren't the most ancient of the noble Muscovite families, but one that had very good and, "clean," reputation. And the family was popular as well as pure. Michael's grandfather, Nikita Romanov, the brother of Anastasia the first wife of Ivan the Terrible and Ivans' most valiant captain, still lived in the popular memory. His father Theodor Romanov was cousin of the Tsar Theodor the first and had the rights to the throne, but with appearing of Boris Godunov was eliminated and sent to monastery with name Philaret later, he was detained as a hostage of the Poland. The second mission of Assembly was to find Michael and persuade him to accept the throne.
