Smoking and Poor Health

One of the most common problems that are killing people, all over the world, is smoking. Many people start this horrible habit because of stress, personnel issue and high blood pressure. Some people want to smoke because they want to enjoy it and is very hard for some smokers to quit or stop. According to Hutchinson Encyclopedia (2011), "Smoking becomes a habit. The process of lighting a cigarettes, the time at which cigarettes are smoked, the situations and moods in which cigarettes are smoked, fit into a habitual pattern that is difficult to break" (para.9).Smoking causes and bring effects to people in a variety of ways such as, nicotine, psychological and sometimes affect your vision.
First of all, people smoke because they want to be fit, many people see their friends smoke and they think it makes them look cool or independent plus them. The first cause of smoking which is Nicotine is an addictive and harmful substance contained in cigarettes. It reduces tension and it is also believed that it can have a calming effect on people who are anxious and worried. Although, people smoke when they are lonely or bored and it helps them to reduce the stress. In addition, Junior Canadian Encyclopedia (2002) asserts that "carbon monoxide makes up about 4% of the smoke of an average cigarette. This gas reduces the capacity of blood to carry oxygen. Thus, while nicotine causes the heart to work harder, carbon monoxide reduces the oxygen needed to do this work. As a result, smoking reduces the ability to hear or see. It also leads to heart disease. As nicotine enters the bloodstream, the arteries become more narrow. Blood platelets become sticky and cluster together, causing the heart rate to increase. Since the heart is beating faster, it is pumping more blood through narrower openings. This leads to strokes and heart attacks" (Para. 4).
Second main cause of smoking is "psychological" which seems to be a very important factor for people to get the habit.
