Haddon and the Struggles of Growing Up

 

He keeps going clockwise and this way he knows that he will never get lost because he will end up in the same original spot he first started at. Christopher is very socially intelligent as he grows older by getting help from other people that know more than him and he also learns some skills from reading books but he is not only socially intelligent, Christopher has many amazing characteristics as well. .
             Secondly, Christopher has always been a sensitive person. As he grows older his feelings get the best of him, and he overreacts in some cases. As Christopher grows older, he does things that other people might find different. Christopher explained, "He held up his right hand and spread his fingers out in a fan. I held up my left hand and spread my fingers out in a fan and we made our fingers and thumb touch each other. We do this because sometimes Father wants to give me a hug, but I do not like hugging people so we do this instead." (Haddon 16). Christopher is a very sensitive person. Christopher does not like being hugged so he has this special handshake he does with his parents. If someone did hug Christopher, he would probably get very angry and uncomfortable and might even hit the other person. Furthermore, Christopher sometimes over reacts in situations, but in this situation, Christopher is very scared and upset. He thinks, "I had to get out of the house, Father had murdered Wellington. That means he could murder me." (Haddon 122). Christopher was overreacting in this situation because his emotions got to the best of him. Christopher is a sensitive person and sensitive people tend to not solve their problems but rather run away from them, and that was exactly what Christopher does. As Christopher becomes more mature he becomes more sensitive but Christopher has other characteristics that help him become a better person.
             Thirdly, self-sufficient means to be on your own and doing things yourself with no help and Christopher learns that you have to be more self-sufficient as you grow older or you cannot become more mature.
