Later on, Emma and Charles attends a ball at the home of a rich and wealthy man, she begins to dream of a complicated life. When Emma goes back to her home she sits around the house bored and nothing to do, so she becomes depressed and it gets to her. Later on, while Emma is still going through depression she gets pregnant. When Charles finds out that Emma is pregnant he decides that they will move to a different town, thinking hopefully she will come out of depression so it would not affect the baby.
Charles and Emma moves into a town called Yonville, they meet the town pharmacist Homais, a man that likes to hear himself talk. Also Emma meets someone who has something in common with her. She meets the law clerk of Yonville, his name is Leon, and he is also tired of living the rural life, and loves to read books to escape the real world. After Emma's nine months is up she goes in labor hoping to have a little boy so she can name him Georges. Also she said she wanted a boy because "a man is at least free, and he can explore the passions of the world, surmount obstacles, and taste the most exotic pleasures." Emma gives birth to a little girl, but at first she do not know what to name her until she remembered the marquise call some young woman Berthe, and from then is when she named her daughter Berthe. When Emma has the little girl, the concept of motherhood disappointed her, and she continued to be gloomy. Then later on she felt like there was romantic feelings coming between her and Leon. When she realized that Leon was falling in love with her she began to feel guilty, thinking that she was doing something wrong. Leon gets tired of waiting for Emma, so he leaves to go to Paris for las school, and when he leaves Emma feels heartbroken.
Emma goes to an agricultural fair and meets a man name Rudolphe, who is attracted by her beauty, and declares his love for her. Rudolphe begins trying to talk to Emma, then he seduces her and they begin having an emotional affair.
