The Right Price of Consumerism

Upon purchasing my laptop that set me back four figures, I swiftly made my way out. Although my departure from the store was filled with excitement. The realization that I was programmed to buy Apple's product set in. Already I own the latest iPhone 6, which has compatible features to Apple's MacBooks; furthermore, constantly noticing how many commercials and websites advertise their products. Did I have a conscious choice in my decision Everytime I saw a student a MacBook, I felt I needed one to become successful. I believe companies use an approach that once they can get one to purchase a product or even if the product was offered free, there is a higher chance that you will return if something new is introduced. If we are never satisfied we will continue to fuel the need to obtain new goods. .
I believe the impact that consumerism has on us hits more than our wallets, it also affects our self-esteem. We have developed a culture that relies on purchasing brand name products in order to boost our self image. When I was younger my parents could not afford to buy me new clothes and shoes, so I found myself the punchline to many of my friends jokes. My over used shoes that didn't have a Nike swoosh or a Jordan logo was often ridiculed. Now able to earn on my own and buy things I desire, I often find myself purchasing products that are quite expensive based on my income. I believe that there is a void I'm still trying to fill with materialistic items. Even though I understand the impact it has on me, yet I am resistant to change my behavior. We all are aware that buying a certain brand name won't make us happy or more attractive to the opposite sex but the constant psychological impact of advertisement has made us believe that if the world approves and recognizes, so must I. Although a consumer society is essential to our modern industry, when it's done by manipulating the masses, it goes against the very definition of consumerism .
