Students and Diversity

Specifically, having a high salience of racial identity is necessary in order to move through the stages of various racial identity development models. (Hurtado 128). Diversity in Elementary schools has not been an issue since children don't understand the true meaning of diversity. This is why adults try to help and aspire children at a young age about differences in culture and people in general. Children have always had their own set of mind, since all they think about is having a friend to play with and diversity doesn't mature in their brain until they are old enough to understand. This is why teachers make the students do certain projects to show the different cultural diversities in the classroom and on school playgrounds. There are parents who rather have their child be friends with someone from their own race and culture because they think the child would not follow their moral values. Teaching your own child to not be diverse will not change the child's identity since everyone's identities are infinite. .
When children enter middle school and high school they aren't taught the basic knowledge of diversity from their parents or school. When a child enters middle school and high school they experience a culture shock because it's harder for them to understand or be able to handle a certain diversity situation. When the student meets an out of state student or foreign exchange student the student won't know how to act to foreigners when they communicate in a different way. For example, a student that has the basic knowledge of diversity might know how to act or treat a student from another country or state, but for the student that doesn't have the basic knowledge might make the foreigner feel uncomfortable. Students who grew up with the basic knowledge of diversity treat foreigners with respect when communicating. The student knows not to hurt a foreigner in any type of manner, but to ask questions and make the foreign student feel important.
