The Effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup on Developing Countr

Many developing countries are dependent on the production of crops such as sugarcane. A problem arose for these countries when developed countries started using high fructose corn syrup in their products over the sucrose that is produced from sugarcane. .
The most common process for making High Fructose Syrup from corn involves four major steps. First, the corn is wet milled to extract the starch. Enzymatic or acid hydrolysis of this starch then produces a feed stream that is about 94% glucose. Third, enzymatic isomerisation turns the glucose into fructose. As the enzymatic equilibrium constant for this step is roughly one, the maximum achievable fructose concentration is about 42%. Finally, if necessary, chromatographic enrichment of the syrup is used to increase the fructose concentration.(Fructose) .
I believe that the use of high fructose corn syrup is not good for developed countries. Compared with sucrose, high fructose corn syrup is one of the worst sweeteners for the human body because of its high concentration levels. .
High fructose corn syrup is used in so many of the products consumed in the United States. This may be a contributing factor to some of the health issues faced by our country. The used of high fructose corn syrup and the risk of heart attack have been linked in some studies. .
I think it would be much better if developed countries used the sucrose that developing countries would produce. This would provide developing countries with the income that they need to become better economically developed. This would also provide consumers with a healthier product. .
