The origins of Three Kings Day started in the Eastern Christian churches. It was for the Feast of Epiphany also known as "The Adoration of the Magi" or "The Manifestation of God" after twelve Days before Christmas ends. January 6 is a date that Christians fixed for their feast early in their history in A.D. 361. Based on the bible the three kings known as Casper, Melchior and Balthazar witness the birth of Jesus Christ. It was said that the kings followed a bright star into Bethlehem and found the child of God gave gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. .
The coastal region of Puerto Rico decorate the homes and buildings with lights, Christmas trees and scenes of the Nativity which is a very popular thing to do in Puerto Rico. The Catholic Church was the Traditional religious influences on why the three king's day is so important. Los Reyes Magos, which are the three kings, is taken very serious and traditional in Puerto Rico. The Catholic Church said that the Magi Saints, Casper, Melchior and Balthazar were to be given each own Day of Feast. During the Three Kings Day, the Octavas and Octavitas are celebrated meaning each king has its own date after the initial feast. .
These originally were the days to honor the Magi also known as the wise men.Melchor was the king of Sultan who was from Arabia. He was oldest of the kings. It was said to believe Melchor was a gentle and warm man. Melchor gift was the gift of gold. Balthazar was a Nubian King and ruler of Ethiopia. The gift Balthazar had given was the gift was myrrh. Myrrh was a precious and pleasant smell which was known to come from the bark of thorny African trees. Caspar was Emperor of the Orient and controlled all of the oriental lands. Caspar's gift was frankincense, which was also similar Kings Balthazar pleasant smelling gift but being a different smell. It was from a tree in Arabia.
Three Kings Days is celebrated annually on January 6 twelve days after Christmas.
