Everyone deserves to be happy and if happiness means adopting a child as a gay couple or being adopted by a gay couple, then so be it. Adoption in the United States has been around for a long time. Adoption offers many children the possibility of having loving parents, and is a solution to finding orphans a stable home as well as helps couples form a family unit. Gay adoption is a more controversial topic. The hardest obstacle for adoption agencies is finding potential parents who are willing and able to adopt, yet unjust legal restrictions keep many children from having two loving parents by denying gay couples the right to adopt. Although adoption helps many children find a loving home, there is an abundance of children waiting and wanting to be welcomed into a family simply because there are not enough parents wanting to adopt children. There are many gay couples who wish with all their heart to be able to adopt a child but unfortunately, are not able to due to the law prohibiting it and other impediments from cultural and religious institutions. Gay adoption provides many orphans with a home, gives children a nurturing family, and is an alternative option for gay couples to have children. Legalizing gay adoption benefits both orphans and gay couples and there is no reason for it to be illegal. .
An increasing number of gay couples are wanting to adopt, but cultural and legal barriers prohibit their ability to do so. In many states it is illegal for gay couples to adopt while in others, gay couples are denied federal benefits. In the article "A same-sex Couple's struggle to adopt" from John Hopkins Magazine, Rachel Stewart Johnson states, "As the sixth year of their journey begins, the men are still waiting [to adopt]. Says George, "There are those moments where you slow down and you start thinking, 'When is this going to happen? What's wrong with us'" (2). Michael George and Chad Lord are one of the many couples who have struggled with adoption due to their sexuality and were often scammed by others.
