Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights

If the U.S. were to do the same, we would see dramatic differences in our social, political, and even economic field areas. Our politicians would no longer have to worry whether or not the people would vote for them because they were gay or were related to gay affiliations, and happiness in general would increase, letting our country finally be that "melting pot" that every kid learned in elementary school. .
America has a pretty crazy history from our Revolution, to the Civil War, to the Great Depression, and both World Wars. What isn't taught in our classrooms and isn't typed into our textbooks is any information on homosexuality or transgender people. In fact, the only thing I've ever seen about that in a textbook was the KKK killing people for it, making it seem like we shouldn't want anyone to have a preference other than the opposite sex because if you don't, you'll die. That's not a message that should be taught to the youth of today, especially with all the activity going on around our country with states legalizing same-sex marriage almost every month. A teacher in a Pennsylvania high school, however, is making a big difference to students every year. She suggests her students read pro-gay books and watch documentaries or movies about it. Though some students resisted and even criticized this at first, they "move from a place of resistance to one in which they become more empathetic to practices, customs, or traits that fall outside what . [they are] used to" (Lester). According to her, once her students are exposed to these kind of subjects, they diversify with not only sexualities but also races. This kind of result could imply that just by adding one single subject to a curriculum could blossom a whole new generation of non-sexist, non-racist, and overall non-prejudiced people who would work wonders for the rest of the world to catch them up to speed.
