Transportation Problems in Mumbai

For example, in the year 2008 alone, Mumbai recorded 6,613 fatal road accidents. Compared to on the national scale, Mumbai reportedly accounts for the greatest percentage of accident related death, 12.5 % ( The Times of India, 2013 ). Mumbai's traffic police have attributed this unfortunate trend to Mumbai's poorly organized and congested roads, as well as how road users are generally ill-disciplined. They have blamed poor motorist behaviours such as dangerous driving, drunk driving and speeding, as some of the common causes for these accidents. There is however also a consensus that the lack of road organisation is in part, to blame. For example, the lack of traffic signals and discipline on the pedestrians part, are also culpable. .
All in all, road users all are to blame for such an alarming statistic. Before road safety regulations improve, Mumbai will remain the nation's largest accident related death contributor. Therefore, road accidents are a major transport problem in the city of mumbai and one that requires the immediate attention of the relevant authorities in solving.
With all the issues stemming from personal transport, an obvious solution would be to encourage the use of public transport. The public transport system in Mumbai is well developed, with most areas of the city being linked by its metro system. Unfortunately, the issue of transport extends even to public transport. The already saturated system is not a popular option amongst commuters and those who ride on the infamous "sardine packed" trains and buses only do so for a lack of an alternative option. The crush in Mumbai's rush-hour trains is so bad that increasingly, it seems, those who can afford to do so would rather travel by car. (BBC News, 2013 ) Furthermore, the unchanging congested outlook of the roads means that people who choose to commute by buses are packed in the confinements of a public bus tugging at a speed of 7.
