Movie Summary - Rosemary's Baby

Rosemary is looking up to him as if in admiration. With his back to the audience, Guy also shows a disregard towards the outside world. The composition of this frame suggests that Rosemary is a frail and vulnerable woman, who can be easily manipulated by others. Conversely, Guy's arrogant attitude depicts the type of person that would take advantage of the situation.
Soon thereafter, we meet the Castevets, the "friendly" neighbors who are secretly in a cult, who worship Satan. After the brief introduction at the crime scene of Terry's death, the Castevets demonstrate an odd curiosity towards the young couple. Minnie Castevet invites Rosemary and Guy over to the Castevet's apartment for dinner. After the lovely dinner, Minnie Castevet asks Rosemary all sorts of questions pertaining to Rosemary's ability to have children, and just how fertile she might be. The camera turns into the living room as Rosemary finishes talking with Minnie. In the living room, we find Guy and Roman Castevet are talking and smoking. Roman Castevet reveals his secrets and proposes success in his career if he joins the coven. However, he must allow his wife to be impregnated by Satan during a ritual. The lighting of this frame is low key, and the smoke represents the presence of an evil spirit. Roman displayed in half lit and the other half in shadow, depicting him as a man with a facade, who really has cruel intentions.
The medium shot used in this frame to expose dialogue between Guy and Roman. This shot has a diagonal composition. The diagonal composition of this scene suggests anxiety in Guy as Roman offers him to join the coven. Furthermore, Roman is found near the top of the frame suggesting power and authority (Giannetti 53). Roman attracts the audience by the contrast of his red shirt and the dull background of the frame becoming the dominant object in the scene. This scene is the turning point for Guy and Rosemary relationship as she no longer just his companion but his stepping stone towards fame.
