The makeup of the 37 acre large ADX (Administrative Maximum Facility) "supermax" prison, built in 1994 in the rocky mountains of Florence, Colorado is not too complex, however, it does have very strong security. The ADX was constructed in a way to keep the prisoners from escaping. Aside from their cells the only other site that they see is the "empty swimming pool" which, according to sometimes-interesting.com has a 4-inch by 4-foot skylight as the only window. It is designed to prevent the prisoners from knowing where they are. In fact there has not been a single escape nor any serious endeavours to do so. Their living situation is unique in comparison to most other prisons. Everything in the inmate's rooms are made of cement. Each room consists of a cement bed, Toilet/sink/drinking fountain in one, a shower and on rare occasions a T.V and mirror (not made of glass). 27% of inmates attempt suicide, with only 5 actual suicides committed, due to their lack of resources. The prison is made to have a maximum capacity of 490 inmates, while employing 347 staff members. As reffered to in the website, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADXFlorence there are currently 410 male inmates. The precautions taken every day to ensure that these criminals are safely behind bars is extreme. .
Daily Schedule.
The schedule for the inmates in the ADX prison is very structured. They spend 23 hours of each day in their cells. Their only hour of time spent outside of their cell is in the "empty swimming pool". Which is an empty room with a window on the top of the roof so they can see the sky but not their location. The majority of prisons allow their inmates to spend their rec time and lunch amongst one another, but here they do not have any contact with the other prisoners. For meals, the guards deliver them one by one to each inmate's cell. The activities one can do in their cell are limited to: taking an automatically timed shower (to prevent flooding) or if they have good behavior they can watch tv in black and white, controlled by a guard and only educational shows.
