The African Lion is a fearsome mammal with sharp claws that are retractable.5 inches or more long (Lions of Africa). They also have soft pads on their paws to allow them to move quietly (Lions of Africa). The body of the lion is covered in a sandy brown colored fur that camouflages them to the golden-yellow grass that surrounds them (Hofer 1). The male lions have a mane that covers the back of the head and the shoulders (Lions of Africa). The eyes of the lion are well adapted to the darkness so they can hunt in the night (Lions of Africa). The lions are the only cat that has a tassel at the tip of the tail. The tassel contains the last tailbones fused together. The teeth of this magnificent beast are extremely sharp and adapted to kill its prey (Lions of Africa). The whiskers are used to sense their surroundings in the dark and they use their rough tongue to clean themselves and drink water from pools and puddles. .
The African Lion lives in groups called pride and used to live all throughout Africa but now they are only found in the south Sahara desert and the east and south parts of Africa (Defenders of Wildlife). These lions are mostly found in the dry areas like the savanna grasslands. The habitat of the African Lion does not include the rainforests in central Africa (Wikipedia). Where there are African Lions you can also find zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, antelopes, and waterbucks. These animals are the prey for the lion. The lions will start to hunt when they are 1 years of age and the female lion does most of the hunting. They like to hunt in groups because they can run fast but for only a short period of time. These lions are the one of the largest predators put they are not the best hunters and most of the foods that they eat are scavenged. Their hunting time is mostly during the night and evening, but occasionally early in the morning. They like to hunt in the night because it makes it harder for them to be spotted by the prey and their eyes are perfectly fit to hunt in the night.
