Woods (1992) further adds that these Topographic Maps are of great importance in the study of geography because they help Geologists to be able to record types and locations of various rock types in a land. Not only Geographers but also Engineers benefit from these maps because in constructing a city or a new a water pump for example, they will need to know which parts of the land are high or which valleys are present in that area, so that they can build the Pump on the highest surface to ease the distribution of water.Geologic Maps are maps of the different types of rocks that are on the surface of the Earth. In any area they will sometimes be more than one type of rock, whether strong on weak and so by mapping different rock types, geologists can determine the relationships between different rock formations which can then be used to find mineral resources, oil, and gravel deposits. Geological Maps are important when studying Geography because they help students of Geography to understand various rocks and how they go lie on the surface of the earth. Schnaubelt (2010) illustrates as well that "Geological maps can be used by geography students, as well as geologists, city planners, architects, historians, and more as these types of maps can help show patterns in the world's earthquakes and other geological activities." They help us understand how rocks are formed and what types of rock formations can lead to disasters such as Volcanoes and Earth Quakes, and even more so how these events affect the development of these very rocks.
Next we have the World Maps or otherwise known as Political Maps. This is probably one of the most common and basic of Maps because anyone able to read and write well as well solve some arithmetic can read them, unlike the previous mentioned Maps. These maps do not show physical elements like rocks or rivers but rather they indicate countries, continents and also the capital cities of these countries are marked.
