My Journey as an Immigrant

"Once an immigrant has found better economic opportunities in a country, he or she will often try to have the family reuniting with him or her (CNN, 2013)".
The United States has had an increase in immigrants in the last decade. Twenty five years ago, I had to come into the United States as an illegal immigrant the journey to get here was extremely hard and difficult. I was just a little girl no more than 5 years old. I can still remember the day that my father took me by the hand and walked with me to the bus station. This is where my journey began. I did not have a clue as to what was going to happen. I was an innocent child; I was told that we were going on a family picnic with my mom and my grandma. My father brought us to Tijuana, a city close to the borderlands (Schaefer, 2012, p. 229). .
From Tijuana, we were supposed to walk for a few hours. They simply tricked me into coming. I can still remember my mother telling me that everything was going to be okay and that it was a happy day and to take it as a trip. I listen to my mother like a good little girl and followed all of her instructions. I was so happy and excited to go on a picnic. We walked from Tijuana on our way up north. The trip took hours to me, it seemed like days, it was a really long time. Then, all of a sudden it was dark, the sun had set and it was night time. I can still remember the fear and panic that ran through all of my body. The picnic never took place, it was all a lie. They had lied to me, this was not a picnic after all, and my elders had found a way to convinced me to take the long walk into the wilderness. .
It was cold, windy, and dark. All I could see was the moon reflecting in what I thought was pavement. I soon came to realized that it was not pavement at all. It was a river. We were instructed to take our shoes and our pants off. Once this was done we were then told to take them and to place them in a plastic bag.
