The Benefits of Organ Donation

Tissue repair can benefit a lot of people and it is much easier to obtain tissue from someone. "Glen Smith, soccer mom and soccer player herself, blew out her ACL sliding for a ball in a soccer game. The doctor said that she hadn't seen an injury like this in 30+ years. Glen got a ligament to repair her ACL from an unknown donor" (Free, 64). Cathy Free wrote this article and many more in an article called "The Gift of Life" in the magazine Good Housekeeping. Free said it put her life back in place and she couldn't be happier. She goes on to live her everyday life, watching her kids play soccer, play soccer herself, and slow dance in the kitchen at midnight with her husband (64). Tissue donation can help even the slightest injury and put a person right back on track to where they were before the injury. Tori Oh, writer for Anaesthesia & Intensive Care wrote an article about how more people can become organ donors. She describes tissue donation as, "a selfless act that can be the smallest donation but make the biggest impact." (14) There are many benefits to tissue donation. You can either save a loved one from the discomfort, or when you pass on you can donate after your death to someone unknown and put their life back on track so they can possibly save a life themselves.
People who are worried about damage to the body after the organ is taken out of the body are highly mistaken. James Childress and Catharyn Liverman wrote a book about ways to convince people into becoming organ donors. Childress is a theologist mainly concerned with biomedical ethics. He states that the body is clothed for burial so you can see no visible scars on the body itself. Skin is taken from the back much like a sun burn peel, and a rod is inserted into the location of any bones removed (Childress, 26). The body is perfectly preserved for a proper burial. There would be no way of knowing that the person had gone through organ removal.
