Plato and Knowing the World

In "The Allegory of the Cave" Plato demonstrated his views of education as, "so too the instrument of knowledge can only by the movement of the whole soul be turned from the world of becoming into that of being, and learn by degrees to endure the sight of being, and of the brightest and best of being, or in other words, of the good" (287). Thus, without education, a person is distracted from reality. He is afraid of learning and it is hard to teach him when his mind is full of darkness and gloom of ignorance. He also become burden for his family, society and nation. Therefore, it is significant for a person to know the drawbacks of ignorance and become educated to participate for the progress of nation.
Without education a person cannot understand the reality. His imagination destructs him from reality. He sees or hears one thing and understand something else. He does not understand the differences between reality and delusion. He implements his unreal observation in every aspect of life. Patrick J. Deneen showed a good example on this issue:.
For many, the movies represent an unreality in some respects more apparently real than unenchanting daily realities. Most of us have encountered people who believe movie characters to be real people, or the stories portrayed to be true. Filmmakers are well aware of this tendency to confuse movies and reality, a confusion that was itself portrayed comically and caustically We thus watch a projected image about projected images that come to life and enter our reality, although that reality is in fact only an image on a screen. We laugh at the conceit, all the while not a little trapped by it ourselves (69).
Not even the example of film world, an uneducated person mix up the reality with other phase of daily life. Therefore, he takes wrong decision in almost every stage of his life. Only the purpose of education can make the change to understand reality for a person.
