What do Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hestia, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hephaestus, Dionysus, and Hermes all have in common? They were all Greek gods. Most of them were related to Zeus. They were all born in different ways. Zeus was king of the gods, his Roman name was Jupiter. He was god of the sky and weather. His parents were Cronus and Rhea; he also had 5 other brothers and sisters. His brothers and sisters were named Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter and Hestia. Before Zeus was born his father, Cronus, afraid that one of his children would overthrow him, so he swallowed then whole. When Zeus was born, Cronus was going to swallow him, but Rhea tricked him into swallowing a rock wrapped in a blanket. Soon, Cronus threw up all of the children he swallowed. Zeus soon became the most powerful god of them all. He was more powerful than all of the gods powers combined. Later in life, Zeus married Hera, his sister and Hera became the queen of the gods. .
Hera was queen of heaven and earth. She was also the goddess of marriage. Hera's Roman name is Juno, and her Greek name means, "Beautiful Lady." Hera valued her marriage with Zeus more than anything. That's why she was goddess of committed love and marriage. Zeus and Hera supposedly had 5 children, Enyo, Eileithyia, Hephaestus, Hebe, and Ares. The cow and the peacock became sacred to her. She was known for her jealous and vengeful nature.
Poseidon was the god of sea, earthquakes, and horses. He also controlled lakes and freshwater springs. His roman name is Neptune. He was the second most powerful god of Mt. Olympus. Poseidon was like his brother Zeus, he fell in love often. He had many love affairs and lots of children. Poseidon was married to Amphitrite, daughter of Nereus and Doris. Poseidon and Amphitrite had 3 children, Benthesicymen, Rhodes and Triton. He had 7 affairs. Athena was the goddess of wisdom. According to the legend, Athena sprang fully-grown and fully-armed from the head of her father, Zeus.
