Our Obese Nation

Time to break the cycle! The government cannot solve the obesity crisis alone, it is an ongoing issue that needs a collaborative effort from the people in control and communities nationwide. The responsibility lies with the government, but community leaders, as well as families can help with this problem to make sure of long term success. Parents have to step in and help their children so that the cycle of obese children will not continue. Children need enough food to support healthy growth and development which their parents can control while there young. Obesity is a constant concern in America today and it will only continue to get worse if people do not come together to make a solution. Changing the obesity epidemic will take the dedication and commitment of the government and the communities nationwide. .
The government can assist the epidemic by pushing for labeling in the foods we eat therefore the people will not be blindsided. There is a variety of fast food restaurants that do not tell the people exactly what they are eating and what ingredients are inside. Once people know what is in their food they can start eating healthier. Food labels provide the nutrition facts, ingredients and where the foods come from which is very important for people to be aware of. Labels should be on every food item, not selective foods. Michelle Obama talks about different ways that she is trying to help the obese issue in her speech, "Remarks to the NAACP". One of the ways she discusses in her speech to the NAACP is how they are going to improve food labeling. This is a great start from the government. She says, "We're working with the FDA and food industry to provide better labeling, something simple so folks don't have to spend hours squinting at labels, trying to figure out whether the food they're buying is healthy or not." (Obama 425). In other words, she is making a great step with her idea because it will allow people to have the information they need to eat healthier.
