A Business History of FedEx

 

By 1983, FedEx recorded revenues of more than $1 billion and was the first company in United States of America to attain such revenue. Two decades later, in 1997, FedEx recorded revenues of $11.5 billion. By end of 1978, FedEx was a listed company in New York Stock Exchange after public ownership the same year in April.
             FedEx is always innovative towards services offered to its customers since its launch in 1971. This has made FedEx to be the industry leader. FedEx was the first company to come up with the idea of delivering packages overnight (Overnight Letter) in 1981, which earned it a great name. In addition, FedEx was the first express company to introduce Proof of Delivery through its system of tracking packages from point of pickup to the destination of the package. Proof of Delivery started in 1986 through the SuperTrack, a hand-held gadget that read and stored the barcode information of a package. In 1994, FedEx introduced the online tracking system through their web site where clients can tracked their packages en route at any time.
             To extend its business and ensure effective delivery of packages, FedEx acquired several companies. In 1989, FedEx acquired Flying Tiger to enhance its service delivery internationally. In 1993, FedEx introduced Federal Express Clear, which is an electronic system for customs clearance to enable fast legal clearance of packages. In 1995, FedEx purchased air routes from Evergreen International too in an effort to expand its market presence in Asia and specifically China due to high commercial activities in the country. In 1996, FedEx launched FedEx interNetShip, which is an online system for customers to process their shipments. This allowed customers to send their packages any time within the twenty-four hours of a day. .
             In 1998, FedEx acquired Caliber System Inc., which led to the formation of FDX Corporation. This resulted in the formation of a massive transportation system worth $16 billion.
