Nowadays, there are only one to two physical education lessons a week in Hong Kong schools. Students seldom do sports in their leisure time or holidays. Patently, sports/health education is not given enough importance in schools. Physical health is generally neglected by students and parents. Parents do not think it is essential for their children to play sports. They do not pay much attention to their children's health. To begin with, we should realize the factors lead to such phenomenon. The reasons why physical health is ignored are threefold: massive forms of entertainment, the sedentary lifestyle of the Hongkongers, and also the great importance put on academic studies and examinations. .
Hong Kong, as a developed city, provides us many forms of entertainment. During holidays and leisure time, there is much likelihood that Hongkongers will go to sing karaoke or play electronic games with friends. With the advanced technology today, people will choose to surf the net around the clock rather than do sports. They put sports activities at the lowest priority and have less interest in it. They will in all likelihood play their phones and computers day and night but seldom, or even never, think of doing sports activities. Hongkongers would prefer playing electronic devices indoors instead of doing some outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming and playing tennis. They think those choices of entertainment are more interesting and attractive than doing sports.
As well as the wide diversity of entertainment in Hong Kong, the sedentary lifestyle of the Hongkongers is a reason for which physical health is ignored. It is noted that Hong Kong is a fast-paced city where most people lead a life of hustle and bustle. Many people have a hectic life and work from dawn to dusk. Thanks to the economic restructuring, people nowadays perform sedentary tasks like clerks, designers and accountants. Also, students are merely asked to sit in the classrooms all day long and concentrate on the teachers' teaching.
