Holding Governments Accountable

Napoleon Bonaparte was an influential individual at this time since he developed military systems and spread the Napoleon Code, which is the basis of legal systems for many countries. Since the government of France was not fulfilling the ideas and beliefs of the peasants, the revolution took place in order to remove those in power that are not reflecting the will of the lower class, which represented the vast majority of citizens in France. The French Revolution was necessary in order to bring down those in power who did not reflect the general will of the people in France. .
The second example of people challenging the decisions made by those in power is the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM). The AAM was one of Britain's most successful international solidarity movements. The movement was based on compassion, commitment, and anger at injustice. Apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa enforced through legislation by the government. The black people in South Africa were discriminated publicly. The movement was founded in 1959, originally as the Boycott Movement, until 1960 when it was named the Anti-Apartheid Movement. The movement campaigned for an end to Apartheid in South Africa. The black people were standing up to the government, which was at the time mostly made up of white people. They demanded sanctions and for the total isolation of Apartheid in South Africa. During the course of the movement the black people campaigned for the release of non-white people detained without trial and many more to do with the unfair treatment of the black citizens. This movement shows us how strong the voice of the citizens can be. In order for change to occur the people need to speak out and that is exactly what the black citizens were doing in South Africa.
Last but not least, the Arab Spring was another example of citizens standing up to those in power in order for change to occur.
