Repeated heroin use can damage the physical structure of the brain causing problems that cannot easily be reversed. Heroin is highly addictive drug, which causes users to develop high tolerances for the drug and become very dependent of heroin the more it is used. Since heroin is so addictive, there are many symptoms of withdrawal that can occur. Withdrawal symptoms do no occur only when a user is trying to quit using heroin. Symptoms of withdrawal can occur just a few hours after the last time the drug was taken. Some less serious symptoms of withdrawal are restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, cold flashes, goose bumps, and uncontrollable leg movements. (NIDA) Major withdrawal symptoms can start to occur 24-48 hours after the last dose of heroin. No matter how heroin is administered, it is an extremely addictive drug. Once a person becomes addicted to heroin, using the drug becomes their primary purpose in life. .
Some problems associated with the use and abuse of heroin include addiction, the risk of contracting HIV or other infectious diseases, liver and kidney infections, overdose, and even death. The sharing of injection equipment or fluids can cause users to contract severe blood-borne viruses, which they can then pass on to their sexual partners and children. Liver and kidney disease can also be a problem caused by heroin abuse. When someone becomes addicted to heroin, the more they use the drug the more tolerant their body becomes. This causes a user to have to continuously increase the doses of heroin they are taking in order to feel the same "rush" they felt the first time they used heroin. A users tolerance of heroin can often times lead to an overdose of the drug, and even cause death.
