As a child he was taught that homosexuality was a sin, according to scripture. His status was ascribed, and he came from a "middle class " upbringing." Both of his parents worked in the household. His dad was also a lease operator for Shell Oil and Gas, and his mom has always had a maternal, "knack," for making clothes. She opened a sewing and fabric business in 1990, in Big Piney, and operated that business until 2000. Andrew has one sister, whom is of heterosexual orientation.
Andrew has no other relatives who are, "LGBT." There was no history of sexual abuse, or otherwise, that may have lead him to his sexual orientation. Leading a normal American life, he has always been a happy, brilliant, young man. His only complaint was knowing he didn't enjoy the typical hobbies of other males his age. This didn't mean much to him, but always raised concerns within his immediate family. As a child, Drew has always enjoyed dressing up Barbie's, and making his Lego men look feminine. He seldom had male friends, as he felt he just never, "fit into the norm." .
After recalling his young adolescent years, he began to notice he was drastically different from the, "norm," around the age of 12. Something about the way he felt and acted wasn't considered acceptable in society; he remained a recluse during his middle and high school years. He began experiencing bouts of depression. This lead him to suicidal thoughts, and the experimentation with drugs in order to cope. He knew he was interested in other men sexually, and if, or when, the world found out, he feared his life would forever negatively change. .
Big Piney consisted of approximately 750 people, and homosexuality is frowned upon. Eager to graduate High School, and leave Big Piney, Drew applied, and was accepted into a large vocational school in Seattle, Washington. Immediately upon his arrival, he began discovering more diverse cultures. He realized that he was finding more about himself, and there were many more people just like him, sharing his sexual orientation.
