Literature and Gender Roles

Throughout history, men and women have been constantly associated with ideas and responsibilities. In "The Wife of Bath's Tale"," Geoffrey Chaucer explores the roles associated with women and their view towards men. Shirley Geok-lin Lim emphasizes the relationship between a father and his daughter in "My Father's Sadness"." Man's standard of living is critiqued by women in Scott Russell Sander's, "The Men We Carry in Our Minds"." Gender biases cause women's individual perception to assume positive or negative feelings towards men. The Wife of Bath explains that, "Long, long ago in King Arthur's day, there was a knight who was a lusty liver" (Chaucer 57-58). The Wife of Bath, as a female, addresses her negative feelings towards this knight who she feels is a "lusty liver"." Women in "The Wife of Bath's Tale"," often highlight that their feelings towards men are negative and show that women, during this period of time, see men as inferior and mindless. The Wife of Bath sends the knight on a mission to see if he is capable of learning ˜what women want most'. After long days of searching, he learns that what women want most is "The self-same sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, and master him; he must not be above her"" (Chaucer 212-214). This shows the Wife of Bath that it is possible for men to be understanding of women, so finally the Wife of Bath feels respect towards men. .
In "My Father's Sadness ", Geok-lin Lim shares her sympathy for her father. She notices his degradation and weariness as he ages. "My father broke with each child, finer and finer, the clay of his body crumbling to a drizzle of silicone in the hour-glass"" (Geok-lin Lim 13-16). As a young lady, his daughter is able to notice that her father is drowned by responsibility. Being a woman, she notices that her father is unable to find time for himself. He spends too much time worrying for others and making his family happy, when in reality, he should be finding time for himself.
