Civil Wars, Greed and Grievance

On the other hand, a form of rebellion that has a motive to make profits when an attack is launch on the government's properties in order to topple the government or gain more machinery is based on greed (Grossman: 1999:269). .
The question to be asked is why do the developing countries in West Africa witness consistent civil wars? Eminent scholars have talk about this problem which is still looming and affecting the economy of countries like Sierra Leone, Angola, and Congo as my case study respectively base on the Diamond deposit in these countries. An economist, Collier (2000 :91 & 96) claims that 'conflicts can easily occur in a society based on the various economic opportunities than by grievance,' and 'grievance-based explanations of civil war are so seriously wrong', thus, this is supported by three major findings of his work which are; primary products that are exported,  high level of illiteracy in a society give rise to high rate of civil war because this people lack knowledge, and they can be easily swayed to destroy what belongs to government. The argument about grievance illustrate a development address carried out by organized rebels, it is not aimed at causing conflict in the society, but usually to base on objectives to lay complaints on how government carry out its functions (Collier and Hoeffler 2004:3).
Collier and Hoeffler (2004) talks about the same points above but in a new dimension to civil war: in this situation, when the per capita income is low, we have a large numbers of supporter from outside of the country there is possibility of having civil war outbreak, and a situation where the country is geographically scattered in numbers with a high population as we have seen in the case of Congo. Government will find it difficult to curtail the rebels (Collier 2006).  More so, Collier (2000) argues respectively that grievances do not have the attempt to become a full-blown civil war in the society because it seeks for solution compared to the greed.
