In the small town of High Ridge, Missouri, the local Wal-Mart does not donate their damaged goods, as other franchises do. Wal-Mart has a strict policy. It states that they may "never sell a broken sealed item on the shelf no matter the expiration date"" (Daniel Webb). The cans can never be sold if it is bent, because when a can is bent it breaks the interior seal that hold the preservation of the food. What that means is that it keeps the food fresh longer. This is very important because "once the seal is broken, there is a much shorter time limit on when the food will spoi" " ( DeGuire). Rather than being good for years, the canned goods last a week to a few months. If a canned good is damaged, it should be determined if it is still edible or not. Determining if the can good is still "good " or not depends on the general manager of the store. They are the one that chooses the strict rules to follow for their particular store. .
For example, the Fenton Wal-Mart donates their canned goods to "Feed My People." " In order to benefit their business and to help families in need, all Wal-Mart's should feel obligated to utilize their resources more efficiently because one of their main mottos is to "be happy, live better.Wal-Mart. By donating to the nearest "Feed My People,"" the community may be reformed in more ways than one. It could be changed in the sense of having a community working together, or having people helping others in need. Donating goods could put food on the shelfs for some of the people in the jefferson county area. The High Ridge Wal-Mart needs to get on the band wagon and start donating their damaged canned goods to the nearest "Feed My People " to get this amazing processes started. Helping the community by donating damaged can goods will benefit people in the long run even though more labor will be required by the Wal-Mart staff.
