Movie Scene Analysis - Rear Window

The particular clip I reviewed from the film, "Rear Window," begins with a clear panning shot of the location which creates the establishing shot. An urban atmosphere is created through the use of the large red brick buildings as well as through the use of the skyscrapers in the background which convey how it is set in a city environment. This is further reinforced through the use of the chimney and the use of fire escapes which suggest connotations of living in an industrialised city. The use of low key lighting within this establishing shot creates a dark atmosphere and the use of the sun which is used as an extra light source when the camera pans through the city in the background portrays how the day is ending and how the sun is setting; reinforcing the time period of the location. .
The clip tilts downwards from the setting to introduce the male character. The male character is first introduced through a medium close up which centrally positions him to face the audience. This creates a sense of importance as well indicating that he is the main focus of this particular scene. The character is introduced sleeping whilst wearing a simple shirt which can further suggest how it is the evening. Hard lighting is used to create a shadow effect over the male character which positions the audience to follow his point of view and to position themselves in the same position as him. A cutaway shot is significantly used to reveal the shadow to the audience as well as to introduce the main female character. She is introduced through a medium shot which is then zoomed to show a close up. Here the audience is introduced clearly to her face and her characteristics. She is presented as wearing a pearl necklace as well as wearing strong red lipstick which portrays that she is of a high status and has a significant amount of wealth. .
The use of top lighting is also used when introducing the female character which suggests glamour and highlights her face to show importance.
