While being raised by his family Malcolm went to West Junior High. At school Malcolm was the only African-American child in the whole school. In Malcolm's class he did not feel like he was being treated like a human although his class had made him class president. Malcolm said that he felt that he was treated like a pet. One day in class Malcolm was asked by his teacher what he wanted be when he got older and he told her that he wanted to be a lawyer. His teacher, not thinking that he could be that, told him that he should think about being a carpenter. After being told this Malcolm felt that African American's did not need education so he dropped out of school at the age of 15 while he was only in the eighth grade. (Malcolm X biography).
After Malcolm dropped out of school, Malcolm was headed for a life of crime. He became known as Detroit Red. During this life of crime, Malcolm was sentenced to prison for burglary. While Malcolm was in prison he encountered the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. Elijah Muhammad was the leader of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam or as other people called them the Black Muslims. The main goal of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam had a strong impact on Malcolm. Malcolm often confirmed the power of Muhammad's teachings and faith. As a loyal disciple of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam, he adopted the x-symbolic of a stolen identity as his new last name (Malcolm X).
Malcolm was released from prison after being incarcerated for six years. After Malcolm was released, he became the minister of Temple No. 7 in Harlem, New York. At Temple No.7 Malcolm preached about racism, self defense for African Americans, and the fear that is far from the streets of New York city for the black community (Malcolm X). Even though Malcolm was the minister of Temple No. 7 & he found the time to create other Temples. He founded Temple No. 11 in Boston and other Temples in Hartford and Philadelphia.
