Critical and Creative Thinking

Critical thinking and creative thinking are strongly linked and involve questioning the assumptions one holds underlying the customary or habitual ways of thinking and behaving, and being ready to act differently based on critical questioning. This concept comes in handy in situations such as during an academic research. When a student sets out to carry a research, whether to establish new facts or confirm and add to old facts, they need to use critical and creative thinking. This will involve learning to create and apply new ideas in certain contexts, seeing existing situations in a different or a new way, identifying alternative reasons to explain a phenomenon, or making new links to phenomenon. The researcher will need to identify and challenge assumptions and develop reflective skepticism. Critical and creative thinking is important to help in judging the rationality of justifications by comparing them to different interpretations and perspectives. It sheds new light on ideas and opens the mind to new discoveries. This is critical for objectivity.

Free will is the ability to act at one`s discretion or without the constraint of fate or necessity. Free will allows for people to make their own choices/decisions without constraints, and this allows one the freedom to make their individual assessment of any situation. Truth refers to a fact or belief that has been accepted as true or in accordance with reality or fact. Truth can be researched into to confirm or reject some facts, but the critical thinking should always seek to establish the validity of truth. Knowledge refers to the information, skills or facts that are gained by a person through education or experience, practical or theoretical understanding of the subject. Knowledge informs the thinking process, and from the skills and information gained, one can use these to clear assumptions and establish facts. Opinion refers to a judgment or view that is formed about something but not necessarily based on knowledge or facts.
