Due to the fact that there is only the altered perception of History for the population to grasp they are less likely to revolt as the past in relation to the Party is always glorified. Then we control the past, do we not? These two quotes futher portray to us the reason's the party gave for altering History. It depicts that when one controls a person's perception of the world and the history in which that person is abiding then they also have control over that person. " The past was erased, the erasure forgotten, the lie became truth. .
             The significance of the memory is that we are shown as the reader how history is altered or erased. His memory proves to us that the Party does in fact alter the past or likewise blames crimes on those that are innocent to control and futher impel a claustrphobic atmosphere on the masses. O'Briens confession that the incident never occured and was only something Winston manufactered and then ended up believing himself depicts how the Party went about brainwashing people into complete obedience. .

The Party see's sex as dirty and wishes to erase the instinct from the human mind. Divorce was not permitted but seperation in the case where there was no children was rather encouraged.
             He "hates" Julia because she represents to him something he cannot possess and because she represents the orthodox and strict nature of the Party.
