An Overview of Sex Addiction

This may work in some cases but in others it backfires. Another issue the Siegel's bring up in their article is that sex is being portrayed as a bad thing; which is why people feel comfortable using sex addiction as a go-to because they know people will be more willingly to help them if they cry "sex addiction ". For some individuals, there is an underlying issue such as stress, anxiety, and depression that is causing their risky sexual behavior. These people are the ones that are considered to be true "sex addicts " but even still, sex is not the cause it is the effect. Researchers against sex addiction want to make it clear that they do not deny the fact that for some people sex can be problematic and unmanageable; their problem stems from the fact that sex addiction is being used to describe any behavior that does not fall into the categories or viewpoints of a typical Christian marriage. .
The media plays a huge factor when it comes to controversial topics. When a celebrity makes a claim on a controversial topic like sex addiction, normal Americans will soon follow suit. For example, when Tiger Woods' infidelity was publicly revealed, he claimed to be suffering from sex addiction and that was the reason why he cheated on his wife with so many different women. Now if that would have been any average person they would have become a laughing stock but because it was a celebrity everyone believed his claim was valid. A journal article posted in Socioaffective Neuroscience and Psychology argued that sex addiction can not be real. Researchers feel that celebrities are just trying to make a trend by stating they have a clinical addiction to sex as a way to cover up their sexual misbehaviors. The article posted in the journal conducted a study at UCLA on how people with sexual compulsivity reacted when they were shown sexual images. The study recruited 52 students(39 male and 13 female) who claimed to have a problem controlling their use of pornography.
