Emotional Appeal and Critical Thinking

Emotional appeal is when a person uses the manipulation of the recipients emotions, rather than valid logic to win an argument. This happens to be a bad or weak way of making of making an objective argument. For example, a debater attempts to win an argument by trying to get an emotional reaction from opponent and audience. Emotional appeals are considered fallacies, because they manipulate emotions in an audience. I myself am vulnerable to emotional appeals especially when it comes to advertising. For example, when I see a Nike advertisement I will feel the need to purchase the latest of the products advertised by them. Nike advertises thier product as if their products or goods are the best in the market, most comfortable and in trend too. They make feel satisfied and happy when I purchase and wear their products just because of the marketing and advertising. This is an example of emotional appeals that I am most vulnerable to.
Poor or unclear judgements are likely to happen when my emotions are aroused. For example, when I was younger my brother played his music loudly in our room that we shared when I was asleep one night. I was awakened by the loud radio and I got shocked and angry. Because of that, I shouted at him and hit him in the arm. This is what I meant by a poor judgement that was made by myself to shout and hit my brother because it is unethical.
This incident happened all because my emotions were aroused and me being angry. I should have just talked to him politely and asked him to turn it off. In addition, it was an accident that my brother turned the radio on and it was not his intention to do so. There are consequences of allowing emotion to dominate one's thinking and in my case, I had my weekly allowances deducted from my parents because my brother told my parents that I hit him. We should not let our emotions dominate because when we are sad, angry or upset, we tend to make poor judgements or bad decisions when we are in this state.
