The Ongoing Abortion Controversy

One of the best parts of being an American citizen, within limitations, is having the right to freely express how one feels. While illicit in other countries, the Bill of Rights guarantees the right to have a voice about virtually anything. Especially with the issue of abortion, having a voice of opinion causes controversy. Abortion is controversial, but people deserve the right to choose. The legality of abortion should be decided upon by citizens due to the tenuous arguments of antiabortionists, health concerns, and the rights of an American citizen.
Citizens that are "Pro-Life " try to declare that abortion is unconstitutional and immoral. These antiabortionists do not realize that out of the 7,591 words forming the Constitution (including all 27 Amendments), "abortion " is not among them. Although the petitioners are protected under the First Amendment to peacefully protest about how wrong abortion may be, they are not the only ones allowed to use their voices. Not only do antiabortionists think abortion is immoral, but another one of the erroneous cries they make is that life begins at conception. Although "Pro-Life " citizens believe that life begins at conception, the Supreme Court rules otherwise. "Then, the Court established that the word "person" as used in the due process clause and in other provisions of the Constitution did not include the unborn, and therefore the unborn lacked federal constitutional protection " (Justia 1). The government needs to abrogate any idea of making abortions illegal and act as the arbiter of the situation by letting abortion remain legal. .
Making abortion illegal is not in the best interest for the United States because it would cause major health concerns. By the government impeding abortion, women are still going to obtain "back alley " abortions, which are performed illegally by inexperienced and non-credentialed people. The prices of these abortions are much more expensive and are not as easily obtained and therefore make poor women ineligible to comply.
