The main similarity between Taoism and Fight Club lies in the main character, the schizophrenic. Jack is essentially the Yin, described to be feminine, flexible, yielding, poised, compromising, soft, weak, and patient. Tyler, the complete opposite, parallels the Yang, described as masculine, decisive, rigid, piercing, reversing, hard, strong, and overcoming. (Harrison 2) "Tyler Durden is a separate personality that I've created, and now he's threatening to take over my real life," (Palahniuk 173) says Jack once he realizes that Tyler may actually become a threat to his own well-being. The two personalities of Tyler Durden and Jack both co-exist among each other, completely diverse mentally, physically indifferent, both striving to take over the lives of one another. .
The characters of Tyler and Jack are amazingly different, but one thing is strong in both minds, the sense of realism. One day, Tyler had arranged five logs on the beach in a particular arrangement so that at precisely 4:30 PM, the shadow cast by the sun would resemble that of a perfectly shaped hand. The perfection lasted for only one moment, but Tyler understood that perfection is worth all of the effort he put into creating the arrangement. "A moment was the most you could ever expect from perfection," (Palahniuk 33) says Tyler admiring his creation. Jack noticed this creation and both of them felt the same way about this perfection and how hard it is to achieve something so great. No matter how different Tyler and Jack are, their beliefs are similar. Both know that no matter how hard you try, humankind can only achieve so much, and then you fall backwards. .
Support groups are there for people who need serious help with their problems; this was not the case for Jack, however. After Jack had explained to his doctor about his chronic insomnia, the doctor suggested that he should visit a support group to experience what true pain really was.
