Policy Opinion - Abortion

Not every woman experiences negative emotions after having an abortion. Some women experience feelings of relief and some may even experience positive feelings before their abortion and then may become sad and depressed once receiving one. Personally, I felt loss and grief along with immediate remorse. Another factor that ties into abortion is the way a woman feels about her unborn baby. Some women look at their unborn baby as just tissue and not a baby yet. If a woman thinks like this then she may experience positive feelings after an abortion. These feelings can be be short-lived and can eventually turn negative. I think that women don't understand the magnitude of an abortion and the emotional downside afterwards. For me, I was very sad afterwards, I felt like I had made the biggest mistake in my life and I immediately wish I could take it back. Even after almost three years I still feel sorry for doing what I did. I feel like an abortion brings feelings that no one should feel. Being depressed brings more problems than having a baby.
In addition to psychological pain, abortions cause physical pain as well. (Rue 543) Since I have been through the process I know what it feels like. It is honestly so disturbing to think about. The pain is intense and I still can't comprehend why I would even put myself through it. It is also very traumatic and will leave an effect for a long time. During an abortion, pressure is felt just like when giving birth and after the abortion, the uterus is still contracting like a heavy menstruation. There are many methods of abortion and the amount of pain that is felt will depend on the method received. Many tools are used along with pressure and suction machines. I also learned that there are over ten different methods used depending on the length of pregnancy. (Birthmothers) Most methods require the dilation of the cervix and contractions are induced, it is like giving birth only the baby is killed and born dead.
