Date Rape

More likely it is related to the hostile nature of a rapist. They believe the hostility within rapists drives them to rape and surpasses their desire to dominate their victim. A rapist uses the sacred act of sex as a primary weapon to avenge his own hostility and quench his thirst for violence (Guernsey 31). While this may be true, some researchers argue that sexual pleasure is a significant factor of rape. They argue that sexual arousal is a key factor in every rape case and is necessary for rape to take place (Thornhill 2000). In a study conducted by Irina Anderson, the results found that rape was motivated by sexual needs rather than power (2001). Still other experts acknowledge the strongest motivating force behind rape is a mans craving for power. A rapist's lacks control in his life, so he seeks sovereignty through the act of forced sexual behavior. Consequently rape becomes a means of fulfilling a desire for control (Guernsey 32). The forces that motivate humans to rape cannot be condensed into one theory, however specific theory's can be applied to specific cases.
Experts affirm that gender roles and inequality give birth to additional motives for rape. Throughout time society has established unspoken roles men and women are expected to play. Men and women feel pressured to conform to the stereotypical mold which society has created for them. Some of these gender roles have cultivated a breeding ground for rape to thrive in. The connection between the act of committing rape and the acceptance of rape myths may be explained by examining traditional gender role expectations regarded by present day society. Males are educated to be dominant, competitive, and aggressive while females are taught to be submissive, cooperative, and docile. These socialization patterns of males and females set the stage for "rape culture" in which the domination of males over females becomes an accepted standard.
