True Spirituality and Faith

In the book, True Spirituality: Becoming a Roman's 12 Christian, Chip Ingram explores discipleship to God as a means of understanding a Christian's relationship with Him. Becoming a mature follower of Christ requires understanding and knowledge in various aspects of discipleship. Ingram addresses key components in acquiring the traits of an authentic disciple of Christ by breaking Romans 12 into five specific parts. His main thesis is that spiritual growth is cultivated by God's desire to have an intimate union with us through the work of the His word and the Holy Spirit in order to glorify God. Christians seeking spiritual growth toward a complete relationship with God should understand their relationship to this world's values, to themselves, and to others, both believers and nonbelievers alike. By prompting the reader to ask important, self-searching questions Ingram provides a manual on living out true discipleship, the mission of Christ in service and sacrifice for the means of the glorification of God. In this paper I will begin by explaining what true spirituality is for Ingram in reference to his main thesis. Then I will give my personal response to the main points Ingram uses to outline his book. My thesis is that true spirituality is full, constant commitment to God through communication and relation with His perfection in order that we might deny self and depend fully on Christ, only by His infinite grace. .
Ingram uses Romans 12 to differentiate between conventional ideas of spirituality and God's standard of spirituality. He urges that religious faith is not about requirements and restrictions, but instead God wants desperately to have a relationship with His own. According to Ingram true spirituality is defined by a divine connection with God cultivated by the Holy Spirit. One point Ingram makes on page 5 is God's desire to connect with us wholly. He requires His people to submit themselves to His will and divine leading.
