Many cultures had different ways of raising their boys, but none were like Sparta. Sparta is very well known for their military and always has been. Their reputation does not come easy by any means. Spartan's military is continually built up with many years of training and hardship. As a boy in Spartan society, life is anything but easy. A young Spartan boy will go through tough physical and mental training to become the best Spartan soldier they can be. If you were a boy, this meant one thing: learning to make war (Brown, par. 1). A few cultures come to mind when the greatest armies of all time are discussed. Whether it is napoleon Bonaparte leading troops in the French revolution; or Julius Caesar of Rome, but no one will ever compare to the dominance of Sparta. The reputation Sparta was not handed to them but earned. With a do not mess with us or else attitude a lethal military is needed.
From birth, boys began their testing to become the best soldiers they could become. Along with girls, newly born babies are inspected for any signs of weakness or looked like they had any type of deformity, they would be left to die on top of mount Taygetos. If the babies were to somehow survive being left atop the mountain, then they would be allowed to live in Sparta for being strong enough. The chances of it happening were practically impossible. The whole idea behind this baby inspection is simple; if the baby does not look healthy or strong enough to help/provide for Sparta they will be a waste of time and more of a hassle than an asset. If they did pass inspection, the real hell was only seven years away.
The life of a Spartan boy was simple until they reached the age of seven. Spartan mothers were allowed to baby their young sons. They were allowed to do this because when the child reached the age of seven, the Child's life as they knew it would change forever. On their seventh birthday, boys would be taken away from their mothers and taken into the streets with the rest of their peers.
