Technology continues to rapidly advance, not only technologically but one of it's main objective is to improve the human lifestyle and provide a better living. Popular fields of development have been cell phones, and the Internet, which now go hand in hand. These technological advances aim to provide a better source of communication and to make interaction convenient, in addition to creating a wide range of networking opportunities. This has raised the popularity of social media and highly impacted people's dependency on it, causing negative affects on people psychologically. As technology continues to enhance and infuse with the world, the integration of social media into society is slowly changing the definition of communication. With the vast interest in electronic devices, it is negatively impacting the way humans are interacting with one another as social media continues to effect the way people live and communicate. Firstly, this paper will begin by focusing on the different methods of communication now available and why little value is expressed for actual face-to-face interaction, due to the preference of sending and receiving text messages and using social medias. Secondly, social media has been associated with affecting the health of an individual and thirdly, as well as their personal lives, in areas such as work, or school, and prioritizing the virtual social media world than focusing on reality. .
One of the main problems with this social media overhaul is the means of communicating, once referred simply as to 'talking', has significantly changed. More people are opting the easier and shorter route of text messaging, rather than speaking, which in turn is causing harm. This is especially seen with teenagers, who are failing to fully develop the interpersonal skills needed later in life [Jef12]. Teenagers are going to suffer because of their lack of an ability to converse in person; this is crucial in any job or field for a career, or even having a social life outside of their devices.
