ADHD - Attention Deficit Disorder

In short it is evident that an individual suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder is likely to be more impulsive and restless as compared to the one without. A recent study examined who is being diagnosed with this disorder and it was most common in children but now there are plenty of adults being diagnosed. The people who are affected and diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder are both adults and children ranging from all different backgrounds from female to males, but it is predominantly in males, and all socioeconomic classes. The number of children 3-17 years of age ever diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder in the United States is 5.9 million or 9.5 percent of the U.S. population. The percentage of boys diagnosed with the disorder is 13.5 percent and the percentage of girls is 5.4 percent. .
There are five basic steps to treating Attention Deficit Disorder. The first is diagnosis which, in itself, can provide great relief. The second is education because the more one understands Attention Deficit Disorder; the better one can understand how to solve the problems it creates. The third step is providing structure, which is important in reducing the inner chaos and providing a sense of control. The fourth step is having someone to provide encouragement, instructions, and reminders to the person with Attention Deficit Disorder. The fifth, and final, step is medication, which helps by correcting a chemical imbalance in the brain. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for everyone and it should not be used as the only treatment (Hallowell 14). But in present day society this seems to be the only way to treat disorders and people are easily convinced by pharmaceutical companies that they need the medication to function. .
The hard-sell campaign by drug companies to drive up diagnoses of attention deficit disorder and sales of drugs to treat it is disturbing. The campaign focused initially on children but is now turning toward adults, who provide a potentially larger market.
