The Tragedy of September 11, 2001

I do think we are making a difference, but unfortunately this [war]` is going to be a long process." (Home of the Brave 123) During the war on terror, the main goal was to capture and kill Osama bin Laden. He said, "Give us bin Laden and we will not trouble you further." That was his simple ultimatum presented to the Taliban. Finally, almost ten years after the war began, on May 2, 2011, leader of Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, was shot and killed by U.S. Navy Seals whom were ordered to do so by the U.S. President Barack Obama. Many of those in Al Qaeda have taken a pledge of loyalty to Osama bin Laden and continue his unfinished work. .
One of the three attack sites of these terrorist attacks was The World Trade Center in New York City. According to Pamela Skillings, an About.com guide, the two identical 110-story towers of the World Trade Center opened in 1973 and went on to become New York City Icons and key elements of Manhattan's famous skyline. It was once home to almost 500 business and approximately 50,000 employees. http://manhattan.about.com/od/september11th2001/a/worldtradecente.htm) It is also said that the Twin Towers were built at a time when New York's future seemed uncertain, the towers restored confidence and helped bring a half to the decline of lower Manhattan. Brash, glitzy, and grand, they quickly became symbols of New York (http://www.infoplease.com/spot/wtc1.html) Before his death in 1986, Minoru Yamasaki, chief architect of the World Trade Center said, "World Trade means world peace and consequently the World Trade Center buildings in New York.had bigger purpose than to just prove room for tenants. The World Trade Center is a living symbol of man's dedication to world peace.the World Trade Center should, because of its importance, become a representation of man's belief in humanity, his need for individual dignity, his beliefs in the cooperation of men, and through cooperation, his ability to find greatness" (One Day in History:September 11,2001 227) When saying this, Minoru probably never even imagined the future destruction the World Trade Center would go through in 2001.
