Like most Tea Party-backed congressmen Congressman Steven Palazzo continues to underrepresent his district and follow the Tea Party current. I'm from Hattiesburg Mississippi and part of the Mississippi 4th Congressional District. People in my area have painfully watched as our old congressman Gene Taylor was ousted and replaced with Palazzo. Since then we have not seen much progress in the area and the congressional seat seems to be a symbolic one rather than a tool to be used in progressing our values and much needed government assistance. Like most republicans he votes as his party does, not in any way making him unique or seem to be bipartisan in any way. He is indeed very partisan. According to The American Conservative Union and That's My Congress reports he received a score of 89% conservative. Despite there being several instances of him voting against party lines, for the more part he seems to over represent one part of his district and not consider the other parts (2013 Ratings of Congress). .
Steven Palazzo is however the face of our district. He is here and makes many appearances that makes many people appreciate and like him as a person. This is the reason that so many people continue to vote for him. They don't consider that their congressman could possibly be the reason for such discontent in Washington. According to a Gallup poll conducted in 2013 only 16% of Americans polled were in favor of the job congress is doing, the lowest in American history. Despite the fact that people disapprove of Congress as a whole among those who could name their congressman 62% agreed with the job their local representative is doing (Mendes).Which is probably why congress as a whole is not so concerned with low approval ratings as long as individual members continue to get high favorability. With Palazzo continuing to adhere to conservative principles during his time in office he does, solidly, represent the majority of his constituents.
